Gurjun Balsam. Dipterocarpus Turbinatus.
Gurjun Balsam is a lesser known yet remarkably versatile essential oil with deep roots in Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian traditional medicine. Sourced through steam distillation from the wood, gum, and resin of the Gurjun tree, native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this oil offers a fresh, woody aroma with a subtle sweetness. Its colour ranges from pale yellow to clear.
Historically, Gurjun Balsam has been prized for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. ² Traditionally, it was used to treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema, diaper rash, cuts, boils, and ringworm. In Ayurvedic and Southeast Asian practices, it was used to support lung health, clearing mucus, easing coughs, and soothing respiratory irritation, often through steam inhalation.
The resin, tapped directly from living trees, was considered part of the tree’s own immune defence, and that healing energy was believed to transfer into the medicine. While it’s not widely known in Western herbalism, Gurjun has been burned as incense for centuries, used to cleanse and ground the spirit. ³
In modern times, Gurjun Balsam is valued in natural perfumery for its role as a middle note and its ability to fix and extend fragrance longevity in perfumes and candles. Its serotonin-boosting qualities also lend it a mood-lifting effect, making it popular in aromatherapy.
We include Gurjun Balsam in our hay fever support blend for its natural decongestant and expectorant properties. It helps to clear respiratory passages, shift mucus and phlegm, and support unobstructed breathing, making it a powerful ally during allergy season. ⁴
Whether found in skincare, fragrances, or therapeutic blends, Gurjun Balsam remains one of nature’s most effective and versatile plant-based remedies.
